A number cake is a special and beautiful way to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. This tutorial will show you how to make your own for you next special event.
How to Make a Number Cake
Number cakes began trending in 2018 and are still a very popular cake request in celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. These cakes can also be made as tarts or cookies. In this tutorial I’ll be showing you how to make a decorated number cake.
What you need to make a number cake
There are a few different ways to make a number cake. There are number pans and number stencils that can be used to get the cake in the shape of a number. I prefer to use the cake stencils, since I make so many number cakes and don’t have enough room to store a lot of number pans. If you plan to make only one cake, the pans would be a great choice. When using the number pans there is no carving cake so this is also the easiest option.
If you decide to use a cake pan, you’ll bake the cake directly into the number cake pan. Be sure to coat your cake pan in homemade cake pan release. For this tutorial, I show you how to use stencils. Before using the stencils you’ll need to bake a sheet cake first. Be sure your sheet pan is bigger than your stencil and make sure you use cake pan release so your cake will easily come out of the pan. Place your sheet cake on parchment paper. Using a sharp knife and your cake stencil, carve your cake in the shape of the number.
How to decorate a number cake
Now that you have your cake baked and cut out, it’s time to decorate! I like to layer my number cakes and add a layer of buttercream piped with a 1A piping tip between the layers. This gives the cake some height and really adds to the look of the cake like you see in the cake tarts.
Using a sharp knife, cut each number in half making 2 layers. Pipe buttercream on top of the bottom layer with a 1 A piping tip. Place top layer of cake onto the piped buttercream. Using the same tip, pipe another layer of buttercream onto the top layer of cake.
Now that you have your base layer of buttercream piped, it’s time to add the fun stuff. There are a lot of different ways to decorate a number cake. You can use fruit, candy, macarons, buttercream, anything you can think of. For this cake I used buttercream, candy, and strawberries.
I usually start with my buttercream flowers and then add my candy and strawberries.
There are many ways you can customize these cakes to make them even more special. You can use different colors, favorite candies, all chocolate, anything you can think of to decorate your cake.
