Edible Sugar Glue Recipe For Attaching Fondant to Cakes

When I started decorating cakes I had no idea how to attach fondant to my cakes or how to attach fondant pieces to each other. I would quickly slap my decorations on my freshly frosted cake and hope for the best. My fondant figures, already looking pretty rough, would look even worse when I was done smashing them together like a 3 year old smashes together their Play-Doh creation. I always ended up with a sticky fondant mess. And none of this helped the already strained relationship I had with fondant.  But then I found the professional cake decorators secret, edible sugar glue.


What is Edible Sugar Glue?


Edible sugar glue is like a magical potion. When it comes to heavy fondant decorations, bulky gumpaste figures, and delicate sugar flowers, edible sugar glue works like magic. Water just doesn’t have the strength to hold things together like it does.


How do you make Edible Sugar Glue?


This is the best part! It’s super easy and cheap to make and you can whip it up at home in no time. There are actually 2 ways to make edible glue, but they are both super easy.

The first way to make it is to dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of tylose powder into 1/4 cup of water. Tylose powder is a powder that is used to make sugar paste. When added to fondant, it causes it to dry rock hard. This is good for making figurines. (Learn more about gumpaste here.)

If you don’t have tylose powder on hand, you can take a small ball of gumpaste and dissolve it into a 1/4 cup of water. Mix your mixture up well until the tylose powder or gumpaste is completely dissolved. If you have a any lumps, let it sit for a couple of minutes and the mixture will thicken up to a glue like consistency.


How do I use it?


It doesn’t take much at all for it to work its magic. With a small amount of glue on a fine tip paintbrush, gently brush your fondant piece and attach it to either your cake or another piece of fondant.


How do I store it?


Your sugar glue can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three months. When your ready to use it, take it out and give it a little stir. If it has thickened up too much you can add a tiny amount of water.

Edible Sugar Glue

  • 1/2 tsp. Tylose Powder
  • 1/4 cup warm water

Dissolve Tylose powder in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken up.
